ART + MUSIC APPRECIATION

Each class will provide participants with a visually rich background of the era and the art created. During the hour, participants will travel back in time to learn about the sociopolitical and economic influences upon artists and see how the world in which these artists worked is reflected in their artwork. There will be lecture and discussion.

The Lute, Mandolin and Guitar in the Classical World
The lute, mandolin and Spanish guitar each have a timeless sonic beauty. In this hour we will enjoy these family-related instruments and their unique personalities. Musical treats from the Medieval world, the Renaissance and the Baroque era will give this hour a special richness. You will also enjoy musical gems from Spain and Brazil.

Golden Age Musical Theater Singalong

Join us for a fun, informal, relaxing singalong of your favorite Golden Age Musical Theatre songs! Whether you’re a great singer, or you just joyfully make noise, all are welcome to sing along with our favorite Rogers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern to name a few! Wear a fun outfit inspired by your favorite musical (don't be afraid to get creative!). Best outfit will win a prize at the end of the night!

Learning the fundamentals of piano plying is a window to all musical instruments and can dramatically enhance appreciation of music. Learning music is an incredible journey. The class goal is to increase your ability ether to play with sincere approach avoiding getting trapped by technicality or just to appreciate beautiful performances.

Classical Music One-oh-Fun!
Intro to Classical Music
Taught by Garrett Harris
Explore classical music in a fun and educational environment without intimidation. Learning about classical music can be enriching and rewarding. Learn the stories behind the music which has unfolded over hundreds of years in countries and cultures around the globe. 2020 is the year of Beethoven’s 250th birthday. Celebrate with us in this four-week course exploring the “Great Mogul” (Haydn’s nickname for Beethoven) as both overwhelming personality and transformational artist. Each class will be paired with wine and light hors d'oeuvre based on the subject matter. Register and receive two tickets to a Mainly Mozart Spotlight Chamber Music Event in La Jolla ($130 Value).
Presented by Garrett Harris and John Polhamus. Garrett has had over 1,000 articles published on the topic of classical music. He has performed in more than 60 operas with the San Diego Opera and is the co-host of the Classical Rebellion Podcast. John Polhamus is a published composer and accomplished performer. John spent 15 years in London performing both musical theater and opera and is also the co-host of the Classical Rebellion Podcast.

Conducting is a physical and spiritual experience - it strengthens the heart, improves muscle tone and relieves stress. Learn basic conducting skills, enhance your knowledge about different musical styles, composers and their great work. Class includes elements of Yoga, Tai Chi to warm up, and attentive listening to different music. You will work on balance and flexibility, developing different range of motion according to musical nuances. No special skills required.
