Exploring 19th & 20th Century Russian
Music and Culture
Taught by Garrett Harris and John Polhamus
Come explore the passion and pathos of Russian music from it’s mysterious origins in the 19th Century to its defiance of Stalin and the Soviet Union. You will learn about “The Mighty Five”, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and others. Expand your knowledge of great Russian traditions such as the ballet, choral music (Russian Basses!), symphonies, piano music, opera and more.
Wine and refreshments provided. Sign up and receive two tickets to a Mainly Mozart concert in La Jolla (a $130 value).
Presented by Garrett Harris and John Polhamus. Garrett has had over 1,000 articles published on the topic of classical music. He has performed in more than 60 operas with the San Diego Opera and is the co-host of the Classical Rebellion Podcast. John Polhamus is a published composer and accomplished performer. John spent 15 years in London performing both musical theater and opera and is also the co-host of the Classical Rebellion Podcast.

The Enchanting World of the Hammered Dulcimer
The hammered dulcimer is an enchanting "world" instrument. This hour will enrich your day with the hammered dulcimer's musical contributions to the Renaissance, the Classical world, American folk traditions and Celtic eloquence. From Persia to China, from Appalachia to Seattle, this instrument makes a cherished contribution to music all over the world.

Fundamentals of Piano

Learning the fundamentals of piano plying is a window to all musical instruments and can dramatically enhance appreciation of music. Learning music is an incredible journey. The class goal is to increase your ability ether to play with sincere approach avoiding getting trapped by technicality or just to appreciate beautiful performances.

Conducting Class
Taught by Polina Sisman
Conducting is a physical and spiritual experience - it strengthens the heart, improves muscle tone and relieves stress. Learn basic conducting skills, enhance your knowledge about different musical styles, composers and their great work. Class includes elements of Yoga, Tai Chi to warm up, and attentive listening to different music. You will work on balance and flexibility, developing different range of motion according to musical nuances. No special skills required.
