THE MUSIC OF ROGERS & HART

Pianist Joshua White was trained in both classical and gospel music and was formally trained in piano at the age of seven with private instructors.  He was immersed in the music of classical greats such as Bach and Beethoven and competed in several piano music competitions. White encountered jazz at the University of California San Diego summer camp and ultimately chose to focus his musical studies on Jazz at the age of 18. He studied with composer Anthony Davis and flutist Holly Hoffman and piano master Mike Wofford to name a few.  In the following years, he made great strides through the southern California jazz community playing with Gilbert Castellanos, Mark Dresser and others.  In 2011, White entered the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in Washington, D.C., placing second out of 160 competitors. One of the judges, Herbie Hancock told music critic George Varga of the San Diego Union Tribune that he was “impressed with by the daring and courageous approach to improvisation on the cutting edge of innovation—he is his own man.”  White performs regularly at Dizzy’s (San Diego), Blue Whale (Los Angeles), The Loft (La Jolla) and other venues. In 2014, the Joshua White Quartet was formed. This bi-coastal group focuses on interpreting original compositions and improvisations.
