Ruth Karhu: La Jolla Community Center Member and Zumba Instructor
Ruth Karhu became a La Jolla Community Center member last year and has experienced from the very beginning a “unique sense of belonging and acceptance” at the center. “The staff is always kind, warm and welcoming to me,” she said. Ruth has attended some of the classes the Center offers such as Alexandra’s Saturday Morning Jazz Dance class and plans to participate in the many yoga classes offered at the center and attend some of the art exhibits in the year ahead.
Her true passion, however, is dance and the Community Center has been lucky to have her as a Zumba instructor for the past year. Ruth has taught dance for more than 20 years and received training and coaching in Latin & Ballroom dance (such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata), from notable professional dancers such as Melanie LaPatin, a US Professional Latin Champion and Choreographer and other master dancers. In 2008, Ruth became a certified Zumba instructor and choreographer by the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN). She has completed multiple certifications from Zumba Basic to Zumba Gold, Zumba Pro Skills and Zumba Toning. Ruth has taught dance and Zumba in New York and on the West Coast, including in a range of dance studios, senior centers, school districts, and more. “Dance is in everyone; it just has to be brought to the surface,” said Ruth. “My passion for dance enables me to be the very best I can—whether training, teaching or performing. If instructors share their passions—their students will perform with passion.”
