About Jim Ugoretz: John Ugoretz has worked on marine resources management and policy in California for the past 30+ years. He received a bachelor’s degree in ecology with a marine emphasis from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. John has worked for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as the United States Navy as a Marine Scientist. John now leads the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Pelagic Fisheries and Ecosystem Program with primary oversight for coastal pelagic and highly migratory species and the offshore ecosystem. John also heads the Department’s Marine Region Outreach project. John grew up in La Jolla and just returned to live here again in 2024. He holds a 100-ton US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential and is an avid SCUBA diver and sailor.​
